Document annotation

A.nnotate is an online web service for sharing notes on documents and web pages using a web browser. No software or plugins need to be installed - it works within the web browser and currently supports Firefox, Internet Explorer 7, IE6 and Safari.

Supported document formats include:

  • PDF
  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Rich Text Format
  • OpenOffice documents and spreadsheets
  • HTML web pages

 

Document entry

Documents can be uploaded via the web page, or sent as email attachments to cc@nnotate.com . This adds the document to your private space on a.nnotate.com and sends you a link by return email.

For web pages, you can enter the URL directly or add a browser snapshot button to snapshot the web page you are currently viewing.

Website administrators can add a custom "annotate this page" link or button like: to their pages, allowing viewers to attach notes, for their personal use or for sending feedback and corrections to the author.

Annotation and display options

  • Highlight text to attach a note
  • Highlighted text is used to build up the user's index
  • User defined tags allow sorting and searching within the index
  • Selectable colors for categorizing notes
  • Choice of note display styles: boxes; right-hand margin; footnotes

 

Group use and document collaboration

  • Documents are private by default, but can be shared with invited users
  • Send a link by email to invite comments
  • Authorized users can read and reply to each others notes
  • All notes signed and dated, with a history of tag changes for workflow or decision making

 

Indexing and search

  • Searchable indexes of documents and notes
  • Click on a note in the index to open the document at the right page
  • List of notes on a single document organized by date, tags, or title
  • Previews of all document pages and web pages displayed next to notes in the index

 

Payment and licensing

Usage of A.nnotate.com is based on a system of credits; there is a FREE light user subscription, and a variety of monthly subscriptions are available for individual and group use. It is also possible to purchase additional prepay credits for uploading and storing documents. find out more...

System requirements

For hosted solutions, all you need is a web browser. Supported browsers include:
