Online Peer Review

Give detailed feedback on PDF, Word and Web documents using a browser

Peer review can be hard work ; to give feedback reviewers often write emails with phrases like 'on page 4, paragraph 2 where it talks about ABC, the author needs to expand upon and refer to XYZ...'.

A.nnotate.com makes peer review much easier for editors, reviewers and authors.

Reviewers can attach comments to the draft simply by highlighting text using a web browser and writing a note. No extra software or plugins are required. Simply upload a PDF or Word document and send links out by email. Uploaded documents are assigned a unique security code, so can only be viewed by people you invite. Once the editor has checked the comments, a link can be sent back to the author so they can see reviewer comments attached to the appropriate places in the text. Comments can also be tagged (e.g. 'clarify', 'expand', 'typo', 'phrasing') and the notes can be shown in boxes next to the highlighted text, in margins or as footnotes, or listed in a searchable index.

Discussion and feedback

Each note can also be used as the starting point for a discussion between the reviewer, the authors and the editor, with several people able to see all notes on the same copy of the document. This makes discussion much more efficient and focussed than emailing attachments. For anonymous peer review, each reviewer can be sent their own link to an uploaded document. It is also possible to conduct shared peer reviews, where reviewers can see and respond to each others comments.

Easy integration with existing journal publishing systems

Many journal publishers have invested in IT systems for keeping track of the status of submissions and reviews. A.nnotate can integrate simply with such systems, by offering a more efficient process for gathering reviewer feedback. If you currently email reviewers attachments, you can now also simply email a link to a document on a.nnotate.com as well, and offer the reviewers the option of giving their feedback online. A web services interface is also available; please contact us to discuss requirements and technical details.
